After their narrow escape from the First Order on Crait, Rey knows she needs to complete her training to face Kylo Ren and the First Order. Luckily, Rey doesn’t need to look far for a teacher. The Last Jedi
Rey has never known things to be easy, but the life of a Jedi is certainly challenging. She knows she needs to learn more, train more, and be more to become what the galaxy needs her to be. And that’s a lot of pressure for anyone. After losing Luke Skywalker, she feels adrift with only dusty old books and a broken lightsaber to turn to. Rey struggles to find that knowledge she craves, all while trying to keep her dark thoughts at bay. The thoughts that reached out to Kylo Ren when she felt so alone. The thoughts that she may not be able to ever be rightfully called a Jedi. And even worse, the thoughts that the last Jedi is truly gone and she won’t be able to protect the galaxy.
Everything to Everyone
What more is there to say about Leia Organa? She has lived through so much. Wars. Loss. Love. And she has come through it all. Leia Organa is the steadfast heart of the Rebellion. The Senate. The New Republic. And The Resistance. But what about the Jedi? She trained with her brother so long ago, but their paths were so different. And while she has always fought for those who could not, she had her own path to follow. The galaxy didn’t need her to be a Jedi; it needed her to be a leader. Every path she has taken has led her here. So when Rey needs a teacher, Leia knows that’s what she needs to be. She has everything Luke taught her, and she is ready to pass on what she has learned.
Hearts of Kyber
Rey and Leia head to Tython in hopes of finding a kyber forge that can heal the cracked blue kyber crystal and restore the Skywalker lightsaber. Rey knows she needs the weapon of a Jedi to face Kylo Ren again. But it’s not just the crystal that is cracked. Rey feels unsure of her path and the pull to the dark within her. She is afraid that she isn’t worthy of being a Jedi. And she’s afraid to fail. Lucky for her, she’s got the best teacher. Tython holds many secrets of Jedi past. But will their voices help Rey, or haunt her?
Bits and Pieces
Madeleine Roux knocked this one out of the park. She nails the voices of Rey and Leia perfectly, and it turns out I’ve missed them both so much. Those looking for new lore and Jedi knowledge won’t be disappointed, and revisiting Tython was a great choice. I’m looking forward to seeing these sequel-era stories start to fill in the gaps and flesh out the timeline and characters. The new characters feel real and relatable as their passions and problems all reflect many of our own. I love the relationship that this book gives us the opportunity to see. Because of the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, I feel that The Rise of Skywalker was limited in being able to give us more Leia moments. This book is something I’ve wanted for a long time. Not only is it a heartfelt tribute to Leia and the woman who portrayed her, but it’s able to deliver some much-needed Leia moments to us when we need them the most. All in all, an amazing book of introspective character moments that really explores the themes of master and apprentice. Teacher and mentor. Mother and daughter. And a leader of the last generation giving the next one everything they need.
This is a must-read for fans of Leia and Rey who have been waiting to explore that relationship as Rey takes her next steps.
