So it’s been about 5 years and 75 issues of the main Star Wars comic line since the canon launch in 2015. The relaunch of the next iteration of the series brings our main heroes into the post – The Empire Strikes Back area of the timeline and picks up in the aftermath of the Millennium Falcon’s escape from Bespin! I am super excited to move past the between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back area of the timeline which is full of stories at the moment.
Same series, new issue #1, new stories, and same heroes in new outfits!
SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD

Why Didn’t You Tell Me
The story actually picks up before the Falcon meets up with the Rebel fleet at the end of The Empire Strikes Back and we get a few great moments of Luke Skywalker from their jump to hyperspace to his sweet 2-1B hand replacement surgery! Also the art is AMAZING and it really shines a lot here with Luke’s expressions.

Scoundrel
Another great thing about picking up here is Leia, Chewie, and Lando really hashing it out over Lando’s questionable actions. I mean, Lando has some good points. There isn’t a lot of wiggle room once Vader is calling the shots. But as convincing as Lando is, Leia is not one for excuses or compromise.

Skywalker Rage
The conflict and chaos within Luke lead to an outburst of familiar Skywalker anger. Luke has to reckon with Vader’s words and the truth of them. And what it means about the teachers he looked up to.

FIST BUMP
While Lando is sneaking around Jabba’s Palace he meets up with an old buddy Amanaman! Don’t act like that quote is not the best.

Regrouping
As the Rebel Fleet regroups at one of their rendezvous coordinates we see some familiar faces. Shara Bey and Kes Dameron, complete with a bit of Shara A-Wing action! Nein Nunb in his sweet vest! They’re all here!

Tarkin’s Will
The Imperial forces hunting down the Alliance fleet is a zealot named Commander Zahra. Her Star Destroyer is staffed complete with a crew who have all lost friends and/or family on the Death Star.

Visions and Voices
Luke ends up having some very interesting visions as he searches for a new elegant weapon and considers his options along the Jedi path. Or even if he belongs on the Jedi path.

Mouse Droid Ambush
No caption needed.

Scavenging
The reality of looking for lost things looks a bit more hopeless than we all envisioned. I wonder if Maz thought of all of this and decided it was a better question for another time…

Weapon of a Jedi
Luke’s search takes him all the way to another forgotten High Republic Jedi temple! Some of the coolest things happen in Jedi temples and this is no exception.
I love it when the Force gets weird and this is some of the most interesting scenes of weirdness and dark side and fire and stuff.

Shadows of the Empire
This arc is the beginning of what I hope is a really cool journey that brings us to the Luke we meet again in Return of the Jedi. Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited to catch up with the missing adventures of Leia, Chewie, and Lando but their characters don’t have as much growth and change as I think we are going to see with Luke.
Also lightsabers and other Jedi things. So there.
