Charles Soule picks up Kylo’s story right after The Last Jedi and puts him on a personal journey. A frustrated Kylo looks to Darth Vader for inspiration on growing his power and resolve in the dark side. Fortunately, he just so happens to have a guide. Darth Vader’s former attendant Vaneé has survived… kind of. Vaneé promises to lead Kylo Ren through Darth Vader’s footsteps. From Tatooine to Naboo, Vaneé knows much, and Kylo is eager to learn from one who was so close to Vader. Soule is the perfect writer for this.

Between his work on The Rise of Kylo Ren and his Darth Vader (2017) comics, he knows both characters quite well. The story is a personal one, but it still has plenty of Star Wars action.

Luke Ross and Stefano Raffaele both lend their art. All issues look amazing. Both in character expressions and dynamic action, the art is explosive, energetic, and stunning.

Kylo Ren is a fascinating character, and every insight into his motivations, convictions, and conflicts is compelling to watch. Charles Soule intertwines Kylo’s hunger for power with Darth Vader’s path to darkness. Kylo’s chemistry with Hux and Vaneé makes for many great moments. The return to familiar locations might not excite some readers, but seeing Kylo experience these places and learning Darth Vader’s connection to them definitely puts a new perspective on the familiar. Kylo Ren remains an extremely conflicted, volatile, and determined character. I can’t wait to see where Soule takes this series!
