The High Republic: Eye of Darkness Review!

“That seed of hope that you cling to, that belief that the Jedi will rise above this, will bring an end to all that I have done… it is a fallacy.”

Marchion Ro

One year after Starlight has fallen and the Nihil have cut off a section of the galaxy behind their Stormwall, the Jedi and the Republic are still trying to find a way to fight back. But against the Nihil, Marchion Ro, and his Force Eaters, is there any hope at all?

George Mann draws back the curtain on Phase III of The High Republic with a bang. The heroes and villains each face their own trials. The damage is done, the stakes are high, and the Jedi search for a way to fight against a weapon that threatens their very existence.

SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD!

A Galaxy Divided

Marchion Ro has deployed his Stormseeds and divided the galaxy. The Republic and the Jedi cannot pass through the barrier and all communications are blocked. The Nihil raid at will from behind the wall as they broadcast their propaganda throughout the galaxy on Starlight Beacon’s former frequency. The Jedi and Republic patrol the border and do their best to protect their people but they are unable to reach those trapped in Nihil space. The civilians live in fear. Behind the Stormwall inside the “Occlusion Zone,” the citizens are left without infrastructure and Republic support. In Republic space, the citizens fear raiding parties of Nihil striking and raiding their resources before disappearing to Nihil space.

How can the Republic fight back against an enemy they can’t reach?

Shadow Warrior

Inside the Occlusion Zone, no one escapes. Jedi master Avar Kriss, former Marshall of Starlight Beacon, does what she can to survive and to help those in need. But can one Jedi in hiding amidst rampaging Nihil really make a difference? As Avar witnesses more and more suffering throughout her travels how can one lone Jedi keep hope alive?

Little does she know, among those same stars, another Jedi is doing the same thing.

Searching the Starlight

On the other side of the Stormwall, the Jedi and the Republic search for a way to help. Elzar Mann can’t rest until he can find a way to help Avar Kriss. Chancellor Lina Soh works hard to find a way into the Occlusion Zone where she hopes her son is alive and well. Bell Zettifar and Burryaga patrol the Stormwall hoping to capture a Nihil raiding party and find a way in. A year has passed but the survivors of Valo and Starlight Beacon are not ready to give up on the people Marchion Ro has claimed.

The Eye of the Storm

Marchion Ro leads the Nihil reign of terror from his throne. The Paths, The Nameless, The Stormwall, and the Tempest Runners are all his weapons against peace. But what is his ultimate goal? Not even his fellow Nihil know for certain. Ghirra Starros hopes to wield her political edge to gain more power but what will Ro think? What is Ro’s plan? What will Ro do next?

Bits and Pieces

The storytelling of The High Republic has been extremely thoughtful, inspiring, and heartfelt. This book is every bit the masterful emotional gut punch of superior quality that we have come to expect from The High Republic. The action is relentless and the neverending tension keeps things moving. The story builds heavily on a core theme of Star Wars: Hope.

The galaxy has changed, the enemy is relentless, and the Jedi and the Republic fear what Marchion Ro will do next.

But that doesn’t mean they will stop fighting.

This is a must-read for any High Republic fan ready to see heroes and hope fight against unimaginable darkness!
